T.E. Carson is a multidisciplinary artist working predominantly with ceramics, textiles and found objects. Drawing inspiration from the developmental necessity of play, various forms of mysticism and divination, their ritual process gives way to assemblage and mixed media objects as a final result.
They are currently working on a mystery box project, involving found and discarded objects and packaging. Repurposed fabrics and findings are hand sewn to create tiny figures and forms. This project is a reaction to the inherent waste involved in consumerist, capitalist culture as well as highlighting the value and lineage of craft.

Statement
From a young age I didn’t necessarily relate to being a human being and felt like an outsider in this universe. Through the sacred and important act of play, I was able to recognize there is an inherent energy present in all material things. This understanding was a bridge that allowed me to connect my rich but sequestered internal world with the web of collective experience that makes up the present moment and what we would refer to as “reality”.
Making art has been an act so inherent to me from early in life, that it took roughly two decades to accept that what I was doing was in fact a creative practice rather than simply a collection of behaviors required by me to stay alive.
Even now, I make sculptures as a way to triangulate my material human self in the here and now. I attempt to approach discomfort, trauma and complex feelings with humor and a light touch. Evidence of my hands and thoughts litter the work, creating a primitive intimacy between me and the viewer.
Each sculpture I make connects me; to everyone and every thing that has ever existed before me, and at exactly the right place and right time in order to precipitate in the present, within my awareness. In turn, each person who is a beholder of my work is also connected back to that same chain and web of energy. In the making and the witnessing, we are all tethered invisibly to any and all that will come in the future as well.
